The chateau, conspicuous on the hill which commands the town, is the bailiff's residence: the cathedral stands near it; and the chain of mountains in the background, are those of Savoy; at the bases of which, and close to the banks of the lake are the pleasant villages of Evian, Ripaille, and Thonon
